A clean HVAC filter keeps your air fresh, your energy bills low, and your heating and cooling system running efficiently. Here's everything you need to know about when and how to replace it.
Replace your HVAC filter every 1–3 months. Standard 1-inch filters typically need replacing every 30 days, while thicker 4–5 inch filters can last 3–6 months. If you have pets, allergies, or a large household, change it more often.
How long your filter lasts depends mainly on its thickness. Thicker filters have more surface area to trap particles, so they last longer between changes.

Your HVAC filter is one of the simplest, most affordable maintenance items in your home — but skipping it can lead to higher bills, poor air quality, and expensive repairs.
A clogged filter forces your HVAC system to work harder, increasing energy consumption by up to 15%. A clean filter keeps airflow efficient and bills low.
Your filter traps dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores. A fresh filter captures more contaminants, keeping the air in your home cleaner and healthier.
Restricted airflow puts strain on your blower motor and compressor. Regular filter changes prevent costly breakdowns and can add years to your system's lifespan.
A clean filter maintains proper airflow throughout your home, ensuring even heating and cooling in every room with no hot or cold spots.
Not sure if it's time? These are the most common warning signs that your filter is clogged and needs to be swapped out.
Replacing your filter takes less than 5 minutes and requires no tools. Follow these simple steps:
Turn off your HVAC system at the thermostat before opening any panels.
Locate the filter compartment — usually behind the return air vent or in the blower compartment near the air handler.
Check the size printed on the old filter's cardboard frame (e.g., 20×25×1) and buy the same size.
Slide the old filter out carefully to avoid releasing trapped dust.
Note the direction of the airflow arrows printed on the side of the old filter.
Insert the new filter with the airflow arrows pointing toward the blower / furnace.
Close and secure the filter cover or vent grille.
Turn your HVAC system back on at the thermostat.
