If your backflow preventer can be removed for winter, follow the manufacturer's steps to take it indoors; otherwise protect it in place.
Perform the compressed-air blowout. Using an air compressor rated for irrigation (typically 10–50 CFM, not a small tire inflator), connect to the blowout port and blow out each zone one at a time — cycling the zones from the controller so each set of heads opens and clears. Stop when only a fine mist comes out of the heads; over-blowing can damage the gears inside the sprinkler heads.
Drain remaining water from valves and heads. After the blowout, lift any sprinkler heads and let any trapped water drain out. Open valve manifold drain plugs if your system has them so the valve box is clear.
Insulate above-ground parts. Wrap the backflow preventer and any exposed above-ground pipes with foam insulation or an insulated backflow cover to protect against the cold, even after draining. Don't block drain ports or air vents.
Protect the valve box. Make sure the underground valve box is seated and covered; add a layer of mulch or insulation on top if your area gets deep freezes. This helps keep the manifold and valves safe from cold snaps that reach below the frost line.
